Costa
de Almeria – a laid back experience.
Many historical civilisations who have left their mark on the
Iberian peninsula are perhaps most easily seen in the province
of Almeria. The region has many ancient archaeological sites
and the local culture retains the hardy, determined attitude
of Los Bandaleros, who were the last of the unfavoured
Andalucians in this area to hold out against General Franco
during the Spanish Civil war.
The
warm winter climate averages between 16–22 degrees, and
makes for a terrain full of contrast where virgin beaches meet
protected areas of natural beauty and desert landscapes give
way to impressive mountain ranges. Almeria is unique in being
the only official desert region on mainland Europe.
It
is a place to come to relax, enjoy good wine and typical cuisine
but still offers all the activities we have come to expect of
a modern resort. Information and suggestions are listed in detail
on our information pages which we provide when you make a booking.
Agua Amarga
Agua amarga means bitter water. The drinking water in the village
has always tasted bitter so even when the village was no more
than half a dozen fishermen’s cottages it had to be brought
in from elsewhere. Surprisingly, the village has remained ‘a
well kept secret’ and is still very small in comparison
to neighbouring Carboneras (10 kms) or Mojacar (28 kms), both
which have expanded madly over the last fifteen years. Agua
Amarga has a beautiful beach that sits in a bay and is considered
safe for swimming as there are few strong currents. There a
few local shops for buying provisions but more than a dozen
restaurants to eat out. It is 45 mins from Almeria Airport and
busiest during July and August.
Cabo
de Gata Natural Park.
For walkers, cyclists, wildlife and flora and fauna enthusiasts,
this is the only coastal nature reserve on the Spanish Mediterranean.
Here you will find enchanting little fishing villages, such
as San Jose, La Isleta del Moro, Las Negras and Agua Amarga.
Unspoilt beaches at Monsil, Genoveses, Las Salinas, El Mirador
and Playa de Los Muertos (pictured left) are all within a short
drive of Agua Amarga.
