South from Cadiz, Jerez and the Andalucian capital of Seville, are the spectacular wild beaches of the Costa de la Luz, so named by the Moors during their occupation. The name means Coast of Light and the brightness of the region where the sun reflects off the enormous Atlantic Ocean is uplifting to anyone who visits. There are miles of golden sand beaches to chose from all the way from Tarifa, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, to Cadiz. It can be windy and the sea can be rough but sheltered coves around Roche offer a good alternative on days such as these. The busiest months are July and August when the Spanish come to holiday from the inland cities. It is about an hours drive from Cadiz and about an hour and a half from Seville. Gibraltar is an hour and a half in the other direction and Malaga about 3hrs.

 

Apart from the beaches there is still plenty to do here. There are some excellent fish restaurants, some night life, shops, markets, galleries, horse riding and golf at the five star resort courses around Roche and Novo Santi Petri.
