on Jimena de la Frontera
Jimena
de La Frontera is another white village 18 kms from
Gaucin, but is quite different in its ambience and appeal. It
is surrounded by pastoral countryside, and is popular with cyclists
and walkers. Built on a hill with an impressive fortress castle
ruin on the summit, this is another delightful location to relax
in or to explore the inland cities of Ronda and Granada which
can be reached by train, taking you through some of the most
beautiful scenic countryside in all Andalucia. Steeped in history,
Jimena has many monuments and ruins dating back to the 14th
century when the Moors were being driven back to north Africa
by the King and Queen of Spain. Typical of a pueblo blanco
the streets are narrow and winding, decorated with colourful
flowers and beautiful date palms. There are no shortage of shops
selling local produce, some excellent restaurants and bars serving
good wine and great tapas. The International Music
Festival held each year at the beginning of July has made it
a popular place for musicians and artists to settle. Jimena
is about two hours drive from Malaga airport, 40 mins from Gibraltar.
